Reid Erekson began his experience in countertops by fabricating marble and granite at a reputable Salt Lake City, Utah company in the mid-1970s. Over the course of his employment, he was offered a position with a company that would be working with marble, granite, and a recent offering to the world of countertops called Corian®. At the time, this new and unique acrylic product was being used in the Salt Lake Valley by only a few contractors, who were fabricating and installing it in capacities far below its amazing potential.
Over time, Reid began to work almost exclusively with Corian ® and the possibilities for this new product began to unfold. He was soon fabricating and installing Corian ® not only as kitchen countertops or bathroom vanities, but also in a variety of new applications, such as showers and tub surrounds, windowsills and trim, shelves and tables, and a variety of unique commercial applications. It was part of Reid’s basic nature to be a perfectionist, and the quality of his workmanship led to much word-of-mouth advertising as the popularity of the product increased. Inevitably, the success of Corian soon led to many viable competitors – among them recognized brands such as LG Hi-Macs ®, LivingStone ®, Staron ®, Gibraltar ®, and Avonite ®. Collectively, these products came to be known as “solid surface” materials.
In 1999, Reid formed Erekson Encounters with a desire to specialize in high-end, custom countertops and showers for individual residences. From the beginning, it has been part of the company’s mission to provide a pleasant and hassle-free remodel experience. This includes a goal to achieve 1-day start-to-finish installs for most kitchen and bathroom countertops, and a commitment to install within 5 days from the date of templating a job.
